Lysande is Loving…

This series is a collaboration brought to you by myself and Michelle Zagardo, to share what we’re loving. I mean, it’s kind of like the highlights of our Slack conversations but we wanted to bring you into it. Let us know what you’re loving in the comments below!

ONE// Everyone at team Lysande would like to wish you all a very Happy Pride Month! We’re also celebrating Taiwan’s historic legalization of same sex marriage and can’t get enough of these gorgeous photos from the first day of Marriage Equality in Taiwan.

TWO// Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by platform flip flops! You can run (unless you’re still rockin those flip-flops) but you can not hide from the 90’s resurgence trend. I personally lived in Mary Janes until the early aughts, no shame in my game! Reminisce, or get major inspo for this summer, with this fun 90’s shoe roundup from Cosmo.

Michelle gave me permission to share this hilarious bit of high school humiliation: during our freshmen year, she tripped in her beige Steve Madden platform flip flops (3 inches high at LEAST!), fell down the stairs to the senior hallway, and landed at the feet of her crush – a senior on the tennis team who was her practice partner. 14 was a hard year!

THREE// As a multi-racial woman, Oprah Magazine’s recent article, “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Biracial Baby Will Make People Like Me Feel Less Alone” brought me joy and resonated with me deeply. Also worth a look, this illuminating 2015 essay from Megan Markle for Elle, on finding her identity and voice as a mixed-race woman in the United States.

FOUR// Need some new music to listen to at the office? From NPR, check out this “First Listen: Calexico and Iron & Wine, ‘Years to Burn'” which drops in full on June 14th.

FIVE// It’s super important, no matter what side of the political spectrum that you fall on, to stay informed on candidates during an election cycle. With all of the hacks, misinformation, political propaganda, realistic satire articles, etc. how does one determine which news is legitimate? This awesome video from TED-Ed is a great refresher on what you should look for when deciding which news to consume.

SIX// This gorgeous slideshow from National Geographic Travel featuring architecture across the globe gave us major #summertravelgoals .

SEVEN// Looking for summer style inspiration? We’re bringing back one of our most popular headbands – Lysande’s Signature Mini Wire Headband. Check out this styling video to see it in action. Behind the scenes: Michelle’s friend starts laughing at the very end as she turns around because, off camera, Michelle’s cat Misty Bear jumped onto the couch and started talking! So cute!

EIGHT// This Vogue interview with Rihanna dives into the inspiration behind the latest Fenty collection (which is TO DIE FOR). Read about the 1960’s Black is Beautiful movement, specifically the works of photographer Kwame Brathwaite and the Grandassa Models, and how Rihanna used inspiration from this period to draw parallels to life today and to inform modern fashion.

NINE// It’s officially SUMMER which for most people means spending increased time outdoors. Sunscreen is my #1 favorite beauty product of all time, which means I’ve tried them all, so you don’t have to. For your standard, everyday, under-the-makeup (or not, I love a fresh face): Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk SPF 50/ PA++++. It’s a Japanese sunscreen, so it’s almost more like skincare, with the texture of a light moisturizer and no white cast. For the pool, beach, and general sweaty recreation: Sun Bum Oxy Free Zinc Oxide SPF 50. This sweat-proof sunscreen won’t drip down into your eyes while you’re out adventuring and is also free from the dreaded white cast.

TEN// This week I caught the documentary “Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much,” which was recently added to Netflix. With James Holzhauer’s epic winning streak coming to an end on Jeopardy this week, I found it super interesting to watch how another super fan turned contestant cracked the code on the Price is Right.

ELEVEN// Watch Leslie Jones say what we’re all thinking in this clip from last week’s episode of SNL:

IG Accounts we’re loving:

  • @carolinecalloway Artist, writer, and art historian Caroline Calloway’s feed is a mix of beautiful images and v funny writing.
  • @slvr.tty 84-year-old ‘Ninju’ Tetsuya lets his grandson dress him, creating one of the freshest fashion IG accounts I’ve seen in awhile.

Podcasts we’re loving:

  • Sooo Many White Guys: hosted by national treasure, Phoebe Robinson, this podcast features guests who are mostly non-white, non-males with some token white guys sprinkled in.
  • Late Night Whenever : Michelle Buteau has been killing it lately, (Always Be My Maybe, Someone Great, Isn’t it Romantic) and her late-night podcast is no different. Featuring always interesting guests and conversations, stand-up and a house band, Late Night Whenever delivers the full late-night experience via radio.
